Can AI buy a gift for me?
Yes: a few AI tools can now buy something for you, though the big shopping assistants are built for buying anything, not for keeping track of the people you buy gifts for. Gratos is an AI gift agent that remembers your people and their dates, finds a gift from a real store, and buys it only after you approve the exact total.
Updated
Why choose Gratos?
- You approve the exact total. Nothing is bought until you do, and if the store's total at checkout differs from what you approved by more than 3 cents, Gratos stops before paying.
- The address link. If you don't have their address, Gratos gives you a link to send them and they fill it in themselves. It's saved to that person, so the next gift can go to any supported store without asking again.
- It knows your people. Save each person's likes, dislikes, sizes, dates and the things never to send them ("no candles"). Gratos stores no allergies or health details.
- Real stores, at the store's price. Gifts come from supported stores, at the store's own checkout total, with no markup. Gifts from several stores need one approval and one payment step; each store charges separately.
- Gratos never sees your card number. Your card is saved as a card-network token, and each purchase uses its own one-time cryptogram.
- Where it works. On the web and by text today. Gratos for iPhone is coming to the App Store. Gratos also works in Slack; we set it up with your team.
- For teams, and the fee. Workspaces with owner, admin and member roles, and gift campaigns. No Gratos fee right now. We'll tell you before that changes.
Which AI tools can buy a gift today?
Facts as each company has published them or the press has reported them, checked October 29, 2026.
| Tool | What it does today | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Launched Instant Checkout on 2025-09-29 for buying in the chat. In March 2026 OpenAI said "Instant Checkout is moving to Apps, where purchases can happen more seamlessly", and that it is putting search and product discovery ahead. ChatGPT is strong at finding and comparing products; the purchase now runs through retailers' own apps in ChatGPT. | Neowin, Digital Commerce 360, 2026-03-06 |
| Perplexity | Instant Buy, launched with PayPal on 2025-11-25, lets US shoppers complete a purchase in the chat. The retailer stays the seller. | PYMNTS, 2025-11-25 |
| Amazon (Rufus, now Alexa for Shopping) | From November 2025, Rufus could buy an item for US Prime members when its price dropped, with 24 hours to cancel. On 2026-05-13 Amazon replaced Rufus with Alexa for Shopping. Amazon says it can watch a price for you and, when it hits your target, "complete your purchase using your default payment method" (Amazon). Its Buy for Me feature can complete a purchase from another store's website for eligible products. | Modern Retail on Auto Buy, Modern Retail, 2026-05-14, Amazon |
| Gratos | Finds a gift from a supported store for a person you name, from what's saved about them, at the store's own checkout total. Buys only after you approve the exact total, and stops before paying if it differs by more than 3 cents. On the web and by text in the US, by invitation, as of October 29, 2026. | How Gratos buys |
All three big assistants are good at a very wide range of shopping, and they change often. Check each one's own pages before you rely on a detail.
What doesn't a general shopping assistant do for gifts?
It can buy the thing. What it isn't built around is the person:
- Who they are. What they like, what they avoid, their sizes, what never to send them.
- When it's due. The birthday or anniversary, and when the gift has to arrive.
- Where it goes. You often don't have the address. Some stores let the recipient fill it in for one order (Amazon has offered this to Prime members since 2021 (TechCrunch, 2021-10-04)). A gift agent keeps it on the person's page for next time.
A general assistant knows what you tell it in the moment, and whatever its memory keeps. A gift agent keeps a page for each person, so you don't explain them again every time.
Will an AI buy a gift without asking me?
Some tools can buy when a condition you set is met: Amazon's assistant can buy an item when it reaches a price you set (Rufus's version gave you 24 hours to cancel). That suits a restock. For a gift, most people want to see what's being bought and what it costs before any money moves.
Gratos never buys without your approval. You approve the exact total of each gift, tax and shipping included, and if the store's total at checkout differs by more than 3 cents, Gratos stops before paying and nothing is charged (Terms, §3.5). Gratos shows you what's coming up, and you ask.
How does Gratos buy a gift?
- Ask for the gift the way you'd ask a friend, typed or spoken: "a birthday gift for my sister under $60".
- Gratos finds it from real stores, using what's saved about her, and shows you the full price: item, tax and shipping.
- You approve. Nothing is bought until you do.
- Gratos places the order on the store's own website, and the store ships it to her.

Gratos never sees your card number. Your card is saved as a card-network token, and each purchase uses its own one-time cryptogram. If you don't have her address, Gratos gives you a link to send her, and she fills it in (how to send a gift without their address).
Questions
