How does Gratos buy a gift?
Gratos buys a real gift from a real store for you, and only after you approve the exact total. You tell it who the gift is for, it shows you the gift and the full price, and when you approve it places the order on the store's own website.

How does an AI buy something for me?
Gratos acts as your purchasing agent. You are the buyer, and the store is the seller.
- You ask. Tell Gratos who the gift is for and what you have in mind, the way you'd ask a friend. Type it or say it.
- Gratos finds options. It shows products from stores it can buy from, at the store's own price, using what you've saved about the person.
- You approve. You see everything in the gift, the person, the delivery details and one total, tax and shipping included, even when the gift comes from more than one store. Nothing is bought without your approval.
- Gratos places the order. It completes checkout on the store's own website, enters the delivery details and pays with your card. Your card is saved as a card-network token, and each purchase uses its own one-time cryptogram.
- You get the confirmation. The store's order confirmation comes back to you in Gratos, and you can follow the order to delivery.
The full description is on How Gratos buys.
What if the price changes at checkout?
Gratos checks the total again at checkout. If the store's total differs from the total you approved by more than 3 cents, in either direction, Gratos stops before paying and nothing is charged (Terms, §3.5).
Can one gift include things from different stores?
Yes. One gift can combine several products from several stores. You see one exact total for everything and approve it once, with one payment step. Each store's cart becomes its own order, and each store ships its part.
Who ships the gift?
The store does. Gratos is not the seller and holds no stock: once the order is placed, the store ships the gift straight to the person. If the gift comes from more than one store, each store ships its own part.
Delivery times are the store's estimates. Returns, exchanges and refunds follow the store's own policy, and we help where we can at support@gratos.ai (Terms, §3.6).
Does Gratos mark up prices?
No. Gratos shows the retailer's own price and does not change it. Some retailers may pay Gratos a commission, paid by the retailer, not by you, and what a retailer pays us never affects which gifts we show you. There is no Gratos fee right now, and we'll tell you before that changes; see pricing.
How does Gratos know what someone would like?
You tell it once. Each person has a page in Gratos with what they like, what they avoid, their sizes, what never to send them, and the dates that matter. You can import people from your iPhone contacts or a CSV or vCard file.
Gratos uses that every time you ask on the web or by text, and leaves out anything on the never-send list. Home shows what's coming up and anything waiting on you, so you can see a date coming.
Where can I use Gratos?
- On iPhone. Gratos for iPhone is coming to the App Store. See the app.
- On the web, at app.gratos.ai.
- By text. Text Gratos and it answers. A texted "yes" starts an approval, and you finish it through a link, the same payment step as in the app. See Gratos by text.
- In Slack, for teams. See the Slack app.
Gratos is available by invitation while we add merchants city by city, in the United States only.
Questions
- Does Gratos install a browser extension?
No. Gratos completes checkout in its own browser, not yours, and does not install a browser extension, toolbar or plug-in on your device.
- Can I cancel a gift?
Yes, until Gratos starts paying for it. After that it is the store’s order, and the store’s policy applies (Terms, §3.5a).
- Can I send a gift to a child?
Send it to an adult, such as the child's parent. Every recipient on Gratos is an adult (Terms, §4).
- Can Gratos buy alcohol?
Where the store sells and ships it to that address. By approving, you confirm that you and, to your knowledge, the recipient are 21 or older (Terms, §6).
