How to stop forgetting birthdays

Most people forget birthdays not because they don't care, but because the reminder arrives at the wrong moment with nothing ready to do about it. Gratos keeps your people and their dates in one place, shows you what's coming up, and finds a gift for you to approve.

Why do I always forget birthdays?

Because remembering them is work, and it's invisible work. Keeping "a mental schedule of everyone's appointments and special events" is one of the jobs Care.com lists as part of the mental load (Care.com, 2021). Dates live in your head, in old texts, in a calendar you don't open, and nothing brings them to you when there's still time to act.

So the fix isn't trying harder to remember. It's putting the dates somewhere that shows them to you early enough.

What's the simplest way to keep track of birthdays?

Start with what you already have:

  • Your phone's contacts. Add a birthday to each contact.
  • Your calendar. Make each birthday a yearly event, with an alert a week or two before, not on the day.
  • A birthday reminder app. There are many. Check what's free: hip, for example, sells a paid plan, hip PLUS, with "Unlimited reminders" (hip on the App Store).

All of these work if the alert comes early and you act on it.

Why isn't a reminder enough?

Because a reminder only tells you the date. You still have to think of a gift, find it, check the address and buy it in time for it to ship. A reminder that arrives while you're busy gets swiped away, and by the time you're free, it's too late for anything but a text.

What helps is seeing the date early, with the next step ready.

How does Gratos help?

  1. Save your people once. Their dates, one-time or yearly, what they like, what they avoid, their sizes and what never to send them. You can import people from your iPhone contacts or a CSV or vCard file.
  2. See what's coming up. Gratos's home shows what's coming up and anything waiting on you.
  3. Ask for a gift. Gratos finds one from a real store, using what's saved about the person, and shows you the full price.
  4. Approve. Nothing is bought until you do. Then Gratos places the order on the store's own website, and the store ships it.

Gratos shows you the date, finds the gift, and you approve.
