Should you give your boss a gift?
Usually not on your own: etiquette advice is that gifts go down the ladder, not up, and a modest group gift from the team, or a card that says what you appreciate, is the safer way to say thanks. If the team does give together, Gratos can find the gift from a real store and buys it only after you approve the exact total.

Should you give your boss a gift?
Generally, no. Lizzie Post, co-president of the Emily Post Institute, put it simply: "Gifts are always down the ladder." The exception she gives is a two-person team, where a gift both ways can make sense (Salon, 2024-12-09).
A gift from you alone can look like you're seeking favor, and it can make your colleagues feel they should match it.
Is a group gift for your boss okay?
Yes, done carefully. The Emily Post Institute's advice is to give to a boss or supervisor as a group, with anonymous contributions: it's "okay to suggest an amount", but "participation is entirely up to the individual" (Emily Post Institute, read October 29, 2026).
Keep the amount low. Lizzie Post: "If your brain goes, 'Oh, $50 bucks would be easy,' make it $25 per person." And include the whole team: "It's important to be all in, or none." (Salon)
Are there rules against giving your boss a gift?
Some workplaces have them. US federal executive-branch employees, for example, may give an official superior items other than cash worth "$10 or less per occasion", with an exception for "infrequently occurring occasions of personal significance such as marriage, illness, bereavement, or the birth or adoption of a child" (5 CFR 2635.304).
Many companies have their own gift policy too. Check yours before you collect money.
What is a good gift for a boss?
Something modest and not too personal:
- A card from the team that names something specific they did. People tend to underestimate how much a thank-you means to the person who receives it (ScienceDaily, 2018-08-28).
- Something to share: good coffee or treats for the team, in their name.
- A useful everyday thing: a nice notebook, a plant for their desk.
For a life event, such as a new baby or a loss, a card signed by the team is right, and a gift can follow. See gifts for life events at work.
How can Gratos help with a group gift?
One person asks: "a thank-you gift for our manager, who loves cooking, under $100". Gratos finds a gift from a real store, shows the full price, tax and shipping included, and can draft a card message for you to edit. Nothing is bought until you approve.
Collecting contributions from the team is up to you; Gratos buys the gift.
Questions
- Should I give my boss a holiday gift?
Not on your own. A card, or a group gift the whole team can join, is the usual advice.
- How much should each person put in for a group gift?
Less than you think. Lizzie Post suggests $25 a person if $50 feels easy, and contributions should be voluntary.
- My boss gave me a gift. Should I give one back?
No. Gifts at work go down the ladder. A thank-you note is the right reply.
- What does Gratos cost?
No Gratos fee right now. We'll tell you before that changes. You pay the store's own price, tax and shipping. See pricing.
