What's a good thank-you gift?

A good thank-you gift is small, suits the person, and comes with a note that says exactly what you're thankful for, because the note matters more than the price. Gratos finds a thank-you gift from a real store for the person you name, can draft the card message for you to edit, and buys it only after you approve the exact total.

What makes a good thank-you gift?

Three things:

  • It's in proportion. A thank-you gift should never make the other person feel they owe you something back. The Emily Post Institute's rule for host gifts holds for any thank-you: "your gift should always be within your means" (Emily Post Institute, 2025-07-10).
  • It fits them. Their coffee, their plants, their hobby: something that says you noticed.
  • It names the thing. "Thank you for driving me to the airport at 5am" lands better than "thanks for everything".

Is a thank-you note enough?

Often, yes. As the Emily Post Institute puts it, "there is no one 'proper' thank-you gift", and "the only must-do thank-you for a guest to give is exactly that—to say thank you" (Emily Post Institute, from 2010, read October 29, 2026).

People also underrate how much a note means. In a 2018 study in Psychological Science, people who wrote thank-you letters underestimated how surprised and positive the recipients would feel, and overestimated how awkward they'd find it (ScienceDaily, 2018-08-28). If you send a gift, send the note with it.

What thank-you gift suits who you are thanking?

  • A host. Something for the home or the table: a serving board, good candles, a plant or flowers, or sweets (Emily Post Institute).
  • A friend or neighbor who helped. Something they'd enjoy and use up: their favorite coffee, a treat, a book you think they'd like.
  • A colleague. Keep it modest and give it discreetly. See how much to spend on a coworker's gift.
  • Your manager. A note, or a group gift from the team, is usually better than a gift from you alone. See should you give your boss a gift?
  • A client. For a business, the IRS limits the deduction for business gifts to $25 per recipient per year (IRS Publication 463, 2025 edition). We can't tell you how it applies to you; ask your accountant. See client gifts.

How much should a thank-you gift cost?

Enough to be a treat, and not so much it makes them uncomfortable. We couldn't find a reliable, current figure for thank-you gifts, so we don't quote one. Match it to the favor: a bigger favor can take a bigger gift, but the note still does most of the work.

How does Gratos help with a thank-you gift?

Ask in your own words: "a thank-you gift for Ana, who looked after our dog all week, under $40". Gratos finds a gift from a real store, using what's saved about her: what she likes, what she avoids, and what never to send her. It can draft the card message, and you can edit it.

You approve the exact total, tax and shipping included, and then Gratos places the order on the store's own website. If you don't have her address, Gratos gives you a link to send her, and she fills it in (how to send a gift without their address).
